Schools Should Not Be Crime Scenes 2025 Cotton fabric and batting, polyester thread 20.5" x 27.5" I was sitting at my desk in a large public school and watched the news in real time about an active shooter at another school in my district. I had friends impacted by the Covenant shooting. Uvalde occurred on my 39th birthday. I was pregnant during Sandy Hook. I was a sophomore in high school when Columbine happened. When I was in late elementary school there was an accidental shooting at a local school. My entire education, as both a student and teacher, has been impacted by school shootings. Schools should not be crime scenes.

This quilt contains metaphor upon metaphor: beautiful front, messy back, emotionally significant fabric and colors, and stitches representing a multitude of ideas. While grief might ebb and flow, it never truly disappears.

For Alma and Carole 2024 Cotton fabric and batting, plastic thread 45.5 " x 22.5" Alma Thomas was an African-American artist who is now recognized as a major painter of the 20th century. She is known for her colorful abstract paintings. Members of Quilts Unscripted used Alma’s work as inspiration in creating colorful columns. This quilt is dedicated to Carole Lyles Shaw, a beloved artist and bee member, who passed away in August of 2024. When choosing an idea for my turn as queen, I kept coming back to the idea of hope. To hope is to look forward with desire and reasonable confidence and to believe, desire, or trust. Hope can be easy to see (like contrasting colors) or hard to find (like colors closely related to one another). Members of Quilts Unscripted chose colors that related to how they were currently experiencing hope when creating their blocks.
